Hedgehog Colors

NOTE:  In recent years, we have personally seen colors that cannot be defined by old color charts.  The color chart below is our personal guide based on our knowledge and years of experience.  It may not reflect the opinions of others, and that's okay :)

Black

  • Quill color: widely banded black
  • Body color: black skin, undercarriage is extensively mottled black
  • Facial color: black
  • Eye color: black

Deep Grey

 

  • Quill color: widely banded deepest grey, near black
  • Body color: black skin, undercarriage is extensively mottled dark grey to black
  • Facial color: deepest grey, near black
  • Eye color: black

Dark Grey

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is dark grey/near black
  • Body color: dark grey skin, undercarriage is often mottled dark grey
  • Facial color: dark grey and in rare cases, even black
  • Eye color: black

Grey

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is grey in color
  • Body color: skin is light-medium grey and undercarriage may be mottled grey or dark grey
  • Facial color: typically grey but may show hues of brown or dark grey and in rare cases, even black
  • Eye color: black

Deep Brown

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is deepest brown in color
  • Body color: skin is dark brown to black and undercarriage may be mottled dark brown to black.
  • Facial color: typically deepest brown but may show hues of medium brown or even black.
  • Eye color: black

Dark Brown

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is dark brown in color
  • Body color: skin is medium-deep brown and undercarriage may be mottled medium-deep brown
  • Facial color: typically dark brown but may show deep brown, dark grey, or even black hues.
  • Eye color: black

Medium Brown

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is medium brown in color
  • Body color: skin is nude-dark brown and undercarriage may be mottled medium-dark brown
  • Facial color: typically medium-dark brown but in rare cases may be light brown, dark grey, or black
  • Eye color: black

Light Brown

  • Body color: skin is nude-light brown and undercarriage may be mottled light brown or brown
  • Facial color: light-medium brown.  Rare cases may be dark grey or black
  • Eye color: black, garnet, or ruby

Pale Brown (Brown dilute)

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is tan or very pale brown in color
  • Body color: skin is typically nude or white and undercarriage may be mottled tan or pale brown
  • Facial color: tan or very pale brown but may have a brown or grey hue
  • Eye color: black

NOTE:  Dilute is a gene mutation rather than a true color.

Champagne

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is yellowish tan to very pale gold but no darker
  • Body color: skin is nude or white and is rarely ever mottled
  • Facial color: nude-pale tan to and in rare cases, light brown
  • Eye color: most often garnet but may be black or ruby

Cinnamon

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is yellowish tan to very pale gold but no darker
  • Body color: skin is nude or white and is rarely ever mottled
  • Facial color: nude-pale tan to and in rare cases, light brown
  • Eye color: most often garnet but may be black or ruby

Light Cinnamon

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is light-medium orange in color
  • Body color: white-tan and typically shows no mottling
  • Facial color: typically tan, pale orange, pale brown
  • Eye color: black or garnet

Apricot

 

  • Quill color: banding is average-wide and is pale orange in color
  • Body color: white-tan and typically shows no mottling
  • Facial color: typically pale orange to no discernible color
  • Eye color: typically ruby or garnet, rare cases may be black

Pale Apricot (Apricot Dilute)

  • Quill color: banding is narrow-wide and is pale peach or pale yellow in color
  • Body color: white and typically shows no mottling
  • Facial color: typically pale orange to no discernible color
  • Eye color: typically ruby or pale pink

Silver (grey dilute)

  • Body color: typically light grey and may show pale grey-grey mottling

Leucistic

Albino
